State Nonprofit Data & Reports

The following interactive map allows you to find data easily, by state, about the number of nonprofits registered with the IRS and nonprofit employees, as well as nonprofit revenues, expenses, assets, and contributions. Where applicable, there’s also a link to our member state association of nonprofits, the latest known state-level report on the nonprofit sector, and the state association's most recent nonprofit salary survey/compensation & benefits report and nonprofit job board.

Note: Numbers on this page refer to section 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organizations other than private foundations, unless expressly stated otherwise. In many cases, these numbers will differ from those in reports prepared by state associations of nonprofits, because they may include tax-exempt organizations other than 501(c)(3) nonprofits, cover a different time period, be based on data retrieved from different sources or at different times, or for other reasons specific to that state. For more information on our terminology and data, see Words, Numbers, Sources.

Source of number of registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits on this map: IRS Business Master Files, Revenue Transaction Files, and electronic (e-File) Form 990 returns processed for fiscal years ending circa 2016 (June 2018). Research by DataLake llc Nonprofit Research (datalake.net).

Datalake also provided the data for "Nonprofits Filing Forms 990 and 990-EZ" and revenues, expenses, assets, and contributions from latest available 990/990-EZ data for 501(c)(3) nonprofits, circa fiscal year 2016 as of June, 2018.

Source of employment numbers and percentages is U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released in 2019, based on the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), representing annual average 2017 employment for approximately 300,000 501(c)(3) organizations (the vast majority of employment). This is the only data on this page that includes 501(c)(3) foundations, which comprise less than 1% of employment.
